Years ago, groups of Catholics from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan joined the efforts of Fr. James Brady, a missionary priest native to Pennsylvania, to care for the poor in La Paz, Honduras. These groups focused their efforts on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and sheltering the homeless.
In 2008, Sirvientes de Cristo (Spanish for Servants of Christ) was founded to contribute to this work, and especially to share the good news of the Gospel with the children in La Granja (pronounced “GRAHN-ha”), a particularly impoverished barrio, or neighborhood, of La Paz.
La Granja is the poorest barrio in the surrounding cities. Economic opportunities are scarce, and those who are able to find work often earn less than a dollar per hour.

The Goals of Sirvientes de Cristo are:
- Support and promotion of the Catholic faith in the barrio of La Granja
- Fostering spiritual growth and physical well-being of the residents of La Granja
- Providing education and physical welfare for the residents of La Granja
- Providing the opportunity for spiritual growth among volunteers
Initially, Sirvientes de Cristo accomplished these goals primarily through our yearly mission trips. Through these trips, we have formed lasting relationships with many of the people of La Granja, and we continue to expand the ways in which we serve them.
In 2019, Sirvientes de Cristo began work on The Divine Mercy Center a community center for the poor of La Granja to improve their material and spiritual wellbeing.
